When Dakota Publishing Company was founded in 1883 (changed to State Publishing Company in 1889 to honor statehood), there were no computers or Internet – not even telephones or automobiles. We were a simple print shop, producing communications for pioneers who were moving to the new territory. Our process, considered high tech at the time, was to place lead type and wooden letters in large frames, running paper a single sheet at a time through old presses.
My, how times have changed! Now we deal in a global economy, moving information around the world in seconds. Printing is digitized and automated, controlled by systems unthinkable when we were founded. Customer needs are complex, and their expectations are high.
Our business is different as well. Our market has expanded, and our business has grown tremendously. We are large, sophisticated and innovative. We now offer a wide range of services – from marketing advice on the front end to graphic design through fulfillment and mailing. No longer are we a simple prairie print shop.
The result: a new name to reinforce our position as one of South Dakota’s oldest and most preeminent companies – a business leader with strong commitments to service, quality and technology. No longer will we be confused as a “state” agency as State Publishing and Printing Company, but recognized for the range of services we can offer to help build our customers’ businesses.
